Back in 1995, Arjun Wallia left his job as Management Trainee at Ford in London and returned to India to set up Walsons Services Ltd. with just one employee - himself - operating from the garage of his house. But it was the heady times of the mid nineties when the country had started tasting the first unshackling of controls and entrepreneurship was taking wing.

The new age economy was dawning and companies had just started to discover the need for concentrating on their core competencies and letting professionals handle the nitty-gritty of mundane affairs like security and staffing. Arjun was among the first to realize that outsourcing through experts was going to become a necessity to optimize resources and time.

The company set out to provide value added services through induction of quality manpower for database management, venue management and maintaining information systems. "When we set out no one was talking on a professional scale even in a basic service like security," says Arjun. "All that was available for security assignments was the local chowkidar. It was this need that I initially decided to fulfill - Security Staffing." His company was one of the first to give a professional look to security services. It introduced smartly turned out security men whom he called 'Marshals'. It realized that the slick corporate world needed security men who were upmarket versions of the watchman. Among his first clients was a major MNC, Hewlitt Packard. His second contract was for just 14 security men from GE. Today there are over 200 security men supplied by Walsons to the same company.

"The reason why companies understood the need for better security was that we made them realize the difference between the ordinary 'guard' and the professional security man," says Arjun.

The Marshals are all verified through the police and undergo a comprehensive training capsule that teaches them fire protection and fire fighting, physical fitness and weights training. There are also lessons on how to deal with people and how to react productively in an emergency. They are also taught how to conduct a physical search and enter recordings in registers.

The company also provides security solutions to individuals and corporations considered at risk. It provides close personal protection for business executives, VIPs, celebrities, and other high profile individuals. "Personal protection while traveling with large amounts of cash, jewelry or other valuables is a service often requested by our clients. If you are headed to the airport, a jewelry show or home with a large purchase, a secured escort ensures your safe arrival," says Arjun.

"Whether you are charged with protecting existing multinational operations, evaluating potential overseas investment or corporate safe travel program you can't afford to be unaware of the threat perception. Walsons’ Verifications and Investigations service provides thorough up-to-date analysis, reports and forecasts and monitors changing corporate and world trends in order to keep companies apprised of developments that might affect the safety and security of their corporation and employees," says Arjun.

Starting with security services his company moved to HR Staffing Solutions and Facility Management too. These two services were launched as a complement following inquiries from clients. To facilitate the exponential growth services, divisions were made to ensure responsive client servicing and focused growth.

Says Arjun, "Well-trained manpower ensures that operatives can concentrate on building the organization. So, from a security provider, I changed my profile into a logistics services company. Initially, it was tough to make the companies realize the benefits. But once they understood the advantages they grabbed at the idea."

Walsons then started developing another dimension - Executive Search and Flexible Staffing for organisations. Most corporations look for staff with reliable connections and recommendations. It's a time-consuming process, and the company filled this slot for a large number of corporations. Databases of industry-specific people were developed and updated using the existing network and press releases in various magazines and journals. "We look at the DNA of the person we hire," quips Arjun.
